In ancient Greece, snakes were associated with the god Asclepius, who was the god of medicine. Asclepius was often depicted with a staff that was entwined with a snake, and this became a symbol of medicine and healing.

In ancient India, snakes were seen as symbols of wisdom and knowledge. The god Vishnu, for example, was often depicted as sleeping on a giant serpent, and this serpent was seen as a symbol of the universe. However, the snake is often seen as a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, fertility, regeneration, and even evil (but not this one).
